PRESENTATIONS AND WORKSHOPS

The following are presentations and workshops that Chris currently offers. Each presentation can be tailored for the audience’s age group (5th grade up through adults) and needs. Chris is also able to develop a custom program just for your group!

 

AUTHOR TALK: FROM BRAIN TO BOOKSHELF: How an Idea Becomes A Book

45-60 minutes, includes Q&A; Grades 5 and up

Chris discusses how he became an author, from childhood writing all the way to the publication of his first book. Students will learn about the writing process, how books are edited, how covers are designed, and more. Chris will also share writing tips. This presentation will also talk about body positivity, empathy, and other themes form the book.

 

ALL OF ME: A Closer Look At The Story

45-60 minutes, includes Q&A; Grades 5 and up

This is a perfect presentation following a class or school-wide read of ALL OF ME! Students will hear about the inspirations behind the book, writing in verse, and explore details and ideas from the book.  This works well with class generated questions about ALL OF ME

 

 

 

THE POWER OF STORIES TO CHANGE THE WORLD

45-60 minutes, includes Q&A; Grades 5 and up

Chris focuses on the transformative power of stories from his perspective as both a writer and a college professor, using both classic and current middle-grade stories; he will discuss with students how stories shape our view of the world. He will explore how the stories we hear and the stories we tell ourselves change us, and how story-telling can be a path to empathy and creativity.

 

 

WRITING WORKSHOPS: These can be done in any numbers of ways and work best in collaboration with the teacher or teachers. Note that these can also include a follow up via Flipgrid or Skype free of charge.

 

 

WHAT’S IN A STORY/STORY WORKSHOP: An Intro to Creative Writing

45-60 minutes, includes Q&A; Grades 4 and up; intended for class-sized groups

In this interactive workshop, students will delve learn about creative writing basics, including plotting, point of view, tense, structure, character development, figurative language and sensory detail.

 

Students can also come with pre-written creative writing projects and learn all about how to be effective workshop partners helping one another to be better writers writing better stories in a positive and encouraging way.

 

WHY POETRY MATTERS?

45-60 Minutes, includes Q&A; grades 4 and up: What is poetry? Students will write original poems on a variety of topics.

 

Students can also come with pre-written creative writing projects and learn all about how to be effective workshop partners helping one another to be better writers writing better stories in a positive and encouraging way.
